Skin Health

Skin is the most exposed part of our body and therefore it is subjected to contract bacterial, viral or fungal infections, irritation caused by traumatic injuries or temporary rashes caused by pharmacological treatments, chemotherapy or radiation. Among skin’s diseases that show redness and itching of the epidermis, dermatitis, rashes and eczema are the most common. Skin rash is usually characterized by redness of the skin, linked to an increase in blood content in the vessels and capillaries close to the skin. Eczema is characterized by red skin, which is also irritated and occasionally full of small fluid-filled wet bubbles.

This condition is often associated with atopic dermatitis. Dermatitis is whenever the skin is inflamed, red and irritated; the word atopic describes the genetic predisposition to have an overly sensitive skin to some allergens like pollen, mildew, dust, fur and some foods.

Unlike the inflamed irritations, fungal infections are characterized by white spots or reddish, detaching cuticles, discomfort and itching. In many cases, irritation is long-lasting but only superficial and can be treated with lotions, creams and gels with anti-inflammatory activity that can relieve the main symptoms (discomfort, burning or itching) or, in the case of deeper irritation, topical corticosteroids.

HERPES SIMPLEX

herpes2

Herpes is a common infection caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV).
There are two subtypes ff this pathogen:

  • HSV-1, that causes labial herpes and the 30% of cases of genital herpes
  • HSV-2, responsible for the majority of the cases of genital herpes

Both can cause bubbles and ulcers of the mouth, on face, on genitals or around anus.

Once a person has been infected by HSV, it remains for life. When the virus is active, the typical ulcerative lesions of the skin and painful bubbles appear. The severity of the first attack is variable: sometimes lesions are associated with malaise, swollen lymph nodes, and tiredness. Skin lesions last up to three weeks.
In a limited number of cases, the initial infection is asymptomatic or sub-clinical, the disease can remain latent for some months before the onset of symptoms, which is the why some cases of genital herpes remain unknown and lead to a significant risk of unaware transmission. Transmission of the virus occurs through sexual contacts with infected persons (symptomatic or not), or through saliva, genital fluids or skin lesions. The virus can penetrate through a cut, an abrasion, a skin or mucosal ulceration.
A useful and natural remedy is lactoferrin. It has anti-viral properties as well as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is able to form a mechanical barrier that prevents the penetration and replication of the virus by blocking in this way the development of infection. It is generally assumed through oral administration, but can also be applied for topical use.
